Construction of sidewalk and safety improvements in the neighborhood near Herbert Hoover Elementary School in Indio began Monday.

Over the next three weeks, crews will focus on saw cutting, tree removal, parking restrictions, limited pedestrian access and pre-construction activities on streets labeled in Stage A and Stage D, according to officials from the school’s Pedestrian Improvement Project.

Project officials asked residents on Monday to remove plants within a 6-foot radius of large trees and stumps marked with orange dots or an “X.”

Weekly updates of the project can be found at www.herberthooverproject.com/.

The project will be constructed in four stages, with completion expected in fall 2023, according to a statement from the city. It includes:

— 20,000 linear feet of sidewalk on 13 streets;

— removing and replacing driveway concrete;

— reconstructing 56 pedestrian access ramps;

— improving or adding new sidewalks at eight intersections.

Roads will remain open with traffic control during construction, with pedestrian access restricted, according to city officials. Crews will work Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Nov. 6, when they’ll begin working at 7 a.m.
