Why your extractor fan isn’t enough if you’re cooking with gas

More than half of households in the UK use gas rather than electric hobs for cooking, one of the highest proportions in Europe.

The study was commissioned by non-profit energy efficiency group CLASP (Collaborative Labelling and Appliance Standards Program) which called for better awareness of the need for adequate ventilation.

The study found that when gas-cooking households spent a longer time cooking, indoor NO2 concentrations continued to increase while the hob or oven was running.

“Empowering people with knowledge on the health risks of these products is essential, and they need resources to upgrade to cleaner and healthier hobs and ovens,” said Nicole Kearney, the European director of CLASP.

Link with respiratory illnesses

The study found that people who cook with gas appliances, particularly those who are more vulnerable or who have pre-existing conditions, may be at a higher risk of immediate health issues, such as aggravated asthma symptoms and other respiratory illnesses.

Homes with gas hobs and electric cookers registered no difference in levels of fine particulate matter, considered the most damaging. This form of pollution comes primarily from outdoor sources and food cooking, rather than the fuel used.

“Gas hobs and ovens are a major source of indoor air pollution, including NO2, which can both exacerbate existing health conditions and potentially lead to new respiratory illnesses,” said Prof Frank Kelly of Imperial College London who contributed to the study.

“For children with asthma, the presence of gas cooking appliances can intensify their symptoms,” he added.
