Wayne Rooney will be confirmed as the new head coach of Plymouth Argyle in the next 24 hours.
The former England and Manchester United captain will make his return to management after extensive talks with the Championship club’s board over the last few days, as exclusively first reported by Telegraph Sport.
Rooney, 38, was sacked by Birmingham in January after an alarming run of nine defeats in 15 games, but will make a swift comeback in the technical area to try to rebuild his reputation as a manager.
Argyle avoided relegation to League One by only a point last season but believe Rooney can lead them to a brighter future and raise the club’s profile following their promotion to the second tier in 2023.
Rooney will be in the BBC studios for Saturday’s FA Cup final between his former club Manchester United and league champions Manchester City.
He was recently announced as a pundit for the BBC during this summer’s European Championships, but he has never made a secret of his desire to return to management.
In February, he said: “I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I’m a fighter and I want to get back into it.
“You know as a manager [being sacked] is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It’s about how you bounce back.
“I’ve had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time.”
