My love for exercise is getting out of hand

DEAR DEIDRE: Whenever I eat, I feel compelled to run around the block to burn off the calories.

I exercise for at least two hours a day and, if I have plans that interfere, I’ll cancel them to go to the gym.

Now I’m worried I’m becoming an exercise addict.

I’m a 24-year-old woman and I’ve always been an anxious person.

I started going to the gym with friends when I was a student. I liked seeing the changes in my body and getting a rush of endorphins.

But now I feel out of control. I can’t go out for a big meal or a drink.

I work out how many calories I’m consuming, then have to exercise for the length of time it takes to burn them off.

If I can’t, then I’ll make myself sick.

I know this isn’t healthy. My body is permanently achy and I have lots of joint pains.

But nobody else thinks this is a problem because I look a normal weight.

Even the doctor brushed me off, just saying I should slow down a bit.

Please help.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your addiction to exercise is affecting your physical and mental health, so it’s good you have asked for help before things get worse.

Many people use exercise as a way to deal with unwanted emotions, like anger, and to handle work and relationship stress.

It also sounds like you may have an eating disorder, which is often linked to exercise addiction.

Ask to see another doctor and be honest about your behaviours. Also ask about counselling.

Contact eating disorders charity Beat for support (beateatingdisorders.org.uk).
