A Labour MP has claimed James Cleverly described Stockton-on-Tees as a “s—hole”.
Alex Cunningham said the new Home Secretary, who has been in the job just over a week, was “clearly unfit” for office given his alleged remarks about Stockton North.
Mr Cunningham had asked Rishi Sunak why a third of children in the constituency live in poverty, to which he claims Mr Cleverly responded: “Because it’s a s—hole.”
The Home Secretary denies the claims, while Eleanor Laing, the Deputy Speaker, said she understood the remark had not been made.
Mr Cunningham, a shadow justice secretary, has represented the County Durham seat since 2010. He told the Commons: “During Prime Minister’s Questions today I asked the Prime Minister why 34 per cent of children in my constituency lived in poverty.
“Before the Prime Minister answered, the Home Secretary chose to add in his penny’s worth. I have contacted his office, advising him I planned to name him but sadly he’s chosen not to be in the chamber. He was seen and heard to say, ‘Because it’s a s—hole.’”
The Stockton North MP added that the alleged remark “shamed” the Home Secretary and the Government, demanding an apology for the “appalling insult”.
