GB News’ Jack Carson has been awarded the Royal Television Society’s Breakthrough Onscreen Award for the Midlands.

At a prestigious media awards evening last night, our West Midlands reporter was recognised for his work over the previous 12 month.

The award celebrates “the emergence of a significant new on-screen talent” with particular consideration for the “personal impact and the recognition of that impact” over the past year.

A busy 12 months for news has seen Jack report on a wide range of topics, ensuring the voice of Britons living in the West Midlands are represented in national television.

Speaking about his win, Jack said the award came as an “absolute total surprise”.

He said: “The category that I was in, the competition in there – So many other fantastic journalists and there was an actor in there as well – you just don’t believe that you’re going to be the one that that wins.

“When they said my name, my face was just a picture. I still need to pick my jaw up off the floor.

“I was just so surprised. You never expect things like this to happen, particularly not for someone like me who hasn’t come from a big wealthy background or influential background.

“Coming from a small town, Spalding in Lincolnshire, that’s not where people get on the TV and win awards. So to achieve this so early in in my career, it’s absolutely fantastic.”

He also praised GB News for giving a voice to the whole of the country, with the channel reporting on regional stories across all four corners of the United Kingdom.

Jack said: “Whenever you cover those big national stories in your patch and you meet all these other journalists, all the other journalists really want to know what it’s like to work at GB News.

“And I can only say how amazing it is and the kind of the freedom and the trust that I get as a West Midlands reporter to cover my patch.

“The channel trusts me to bring the viewers the stories that really matter to the people in this region as all the other regional reporters do. We’re on the ground. We’re getting the reaction. We are the people’s channel. We want the reaction from the people all the time to all these big stories.

“That really drives us forward, that drives me forward, and that’s why I got into this job in the first place because people and people’s stories interest me so much and that’s what I absolutely love to do.”

“To win this and be recognised like this, it’s beyond my wildest dreams.

“I can’t thank everyone at GB News enough for the for the opportunity that they gave a young journalist, and trusted a young journalist, like this. I’ll be forever grateful.”
