A homeless woman has been found living inside a Michigan rooftop grocery store sign where she appeared to have set up an office.
The 34-year-old vagrant, whose identity was not disclosed, was found April 23 when a contractor was investigating an extension cord on the roof.
She had been living behind the triangle-shaped sign – approximately 5ft wide and 8ft high that has a door accessible to the roof – of the Family Fare supermarket, located in Midland, a city approximately 130 miles north of Detroit.
She appeared to be using electricity that was powered by the grocery store.
Midland Police Department Officer Brennon Warren said the woman told them she that had a job but, had been living inside the retailer’s sign for nearly a year, but did not provide further details, Fox19Now reported.
Warren said she agreed to leave and no charges were pressed, as per the news outlet.
On Thursday, the officer said: ‘It’s a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign.’
Some of the shocking items the officer discovered included flooring the woman had laid down, a desk, clothing, a Keuring coffee maker, printer and a computer.
He said, ‘things you’d have in your home,’ and explained that she was able to get electricity through a power cord plugged into an outlet on the roof.
It is unclear how the woman was able to get onto the roof – no signs of a ladder were around- and appeared to puzzle the officer.
‘I honestly don’t know how she was getting up there. She didn’t indicate, either,’ he said.
The woman complied with the officer’s request and left with no issue, and no charges were pressed.
It remains unclear where the woman had gone.
Adrienne Chance, the spokesperson for SpartanNash, the parent company of Family Fare, told the news outlet that the employees at the store responded ‘with the utmost compassion and professionalism,’ upon learning the news.
Though she did not provide further details on the matter, she spoke about the widespread housing issue facing the nation.
‘Ensuring there is ample safe, affordable housing continues to be a widespread issue nationwide that our community needs to partner in solving,’ she said.
The officer said, they provided her with some information about services in the area.
‘She apologized and continued on her way,’ Officer Warren said. ‘Where she went from there, I don’t know.’
