Today is Good Friday and to mark the occasion we’ve rounded up some of our absolute favourites from across the region. From award-winning takeaways to real hidden gems, there are plenty to choose from.
Even if fish isn’t your thing, these chip shops have more on the menu including pie dinners, burgers and even Chinese specials. With so many to choose from it can be hard to know where to find a good chippy, so our writers have decided to share their favourites.

The Good Catch, Formby – Kate Lally
You know a chippy is good when it’s nowhere near a town or village’s centre but still manages to have people queuing outside at lunchtime on a Monday. Unless you’re getting the train to or from the beach, The Good Catch in Formby is a bit out the way, but it’s definitely worth the trip.
The battered fish is incredible, tasty without being greasy, and not sickly like some chip shops’ efforts can be – and their curry sauce is the perfect dipping accompaniment. But my go-to order is one that will likely go down as blasphemy with many chippy lovers.
The Good Catch’s salt and pepper squid bites are one of the best things I have ever tasted (demolished) from a takeaway. They are crispy and delicious, without being too dry or too chewy, and are smothered in just enough salt and peppery goodness. They are worth the trip to Freshfield alone.

George Gerry’s, Bootle – Courtney Eales
I have been going to this chippy for years and it never disappoints. With a broad menu to suit all tastes there is something on offer for everyone who visits George Gerry’s chippy.
You can’t go wrong with a classic order of fish and chips and the portion sizes are always generous. I have tried fish and chips from many places but I am yet to find one that competes with George Gerry’s. Their gravy makes the perfect addition to many meals, it is a perfect consistency and tastes amazing.
There are often queues forming at this chippy which can only ever be a good sign. The food is always cooked to perfection and it’s a treat to tuck into.

Sun Wah, Tranmere – Cheryl Mullin
It’s always a good sign when you walk past a chippy and it looks constantly busy – and that’s the case with Sun Wah. The chippy has been serving food to hungry Tranmere residents for years now, and has even made it to the finals of the British Takeaway Awards a few times.
That’s because it gets the basics right – the chips are never swimming in grease, and are always deliciously crisp. As a midweek treat, you can’t go wrong with half and half – chips, egg fried rice and lashings of curry sauce, that’s hot enough to add flavour, without drowning out the rest of the dish.
Sun Wah is also famous for its salt and pepper dishes – especially its Belter Box which comes with assorted salt and pepper goodies including spring rolls, onion rings, prawn toast, ribs, Sui Mai and dipping sauces. The regular menu also offers dozens of chinese meals – with beancurd in black bean sauce a personal favourite.

Kim’s Anfield Supper Bar, Anfield – Steve Graves
Chip shops near football grounds don’t always have the best reputations. Dishing out thousands of trays of chips and curry every matchday is demanding, and it’s understandable if service doesn’t always come with a smile when it’s 10 minutes till kickoff and the queue is still out of the door. So Kim’s Anfield Supper Bar is a real gem. As it’s at the Anfield Road end of the ground, it attracts both home and away supporters and is a hive of activity whenever Liverpool are in action. Standards are high though, with a matchday menu offering plenty of familiar favourites. The regular menu includes Chinese and other dishes, but you won’t go far wrong with a pie dinner, swapping curry for gravy of course.

Martins Lane Fish and Chips, Wallasey – Rebecca Koncienzcy
I am a new convert to this chippy but now I won’t go anywhere else. It has all the usual favourite Chinese-inspired dishes on the menu but sometimes you can’t beat the standard fish and chips. And Martins Lane does them the best. Crispy battered fish that is soft, flakey and perfectly seasoned alongside a tower of fluffy chips is exactly the comfort food I want on a Friday evening. While many would go for peas and gravy with their order for me it is their curry sauce that takes them to the next level. It is fruity but with a wonderful spicy kick that gives the whole meal the perfect umami flavour. This is my ultimate chippy meal.

Hung Wan, Fazakerley – Ellen Kirwin
Nowadays you can get a chippy delivered to your house within minutes, after just a few clicks on your phone. But there’s something nostalgic and wholesome about walking to the local chippy and ordering in person, waiting in the warmth and clutching the chip bag on the way home. That’s the experience you’ll get at Hung Wan. The family owned chippy won’t deliver but the locals who’ve been going for more than a decade will know to pre-order, so they can get their favourite meals on a busy night. The portions are massive and always piping hot. I’m yet to have noodles or fried rice that taste as good as what’s on offer at the Hung Wan. Meals always taste like they’re freshly made and the staff are happy to talk through the menu with you.

Steve’s, Aigburth Vale – Maria Breslin
On an average Friday night the queue outside Steve’s snakes down Ashfield Road. On Good Friday it stretches down to the Vale and beyond. That’s because Steve’s is a first-class, family-run chippy which has stood the test of time and is worth the wait. It opened its doors way back in 1956 and moved to its current premises eight years later. Spotlessly clean with friendly and chatty staff, a stroll to Steve’s is always so much more satisfying than ordering in – though I would recommend calling ahead with your order if you want to swerve that queue.
Like most Liverpool chippies, the menu at Steve’s is vast with the takeaway serving everything from burgers and kebabs, Chinese dishes, Holland’s pies, pineapple fritters and the classic mixed grill. There’s even fresh salad inexplicably on the menu. But for me it’s all about the fish and chips. A good-size fish, which flakes into delicious chunks and is never overcooked, encased in a golden brown batter that is crisped to perfection. Served with the finest chips south Liverpool has to offer, doused in vinegar alongside a healthy dollop of mushy peas, a recently acquired taste, it is the perfect Friday night takeaway. In fact, perfect on any night.

Mayflower, Pensby – Olivia Williams
My family and I have been going to the Mayflower for as long as I can remember. And I am sure we will still be going in years to come. A sign of a good takeaway is when there’s no room to sit or stand on a Friday and Saturday night due to how busy it is and this is exactly the case with the Mayflower.
The fish at this family-run restaurant is cooked to order (and always huge) right in front of you and the old school-style chips are always piping hot. Their Chinese dishes are always tasty and there is a huge array to choose from – my favourite is their chilli king prawn in garlic sauce.

Marigolds, West Kirby – Sophie McCoid
No visit to the seaside is complete without a trip to the chip shop and there’s few better places than Marigolds in West Kirby. This chippy’s reputation precedes it and there’s often a queue out of the door – especially on warm sunny days. But the shop lives up to the hype, with some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten coming from there. The fish is battered to perfection, with the chips piping hot and perfect when smothered in gravy and mushy peas. There’s a whole range of dishes available with the pies and chicken nuggets both also worthy of a mention. This chippy is well worth a visit, just be prepared for a wait.

Chris’s Chippy, Mossley Hill – Dan Haygarth
Chris’s is a Mossley Hill institution that has been serving great food since 1967, when husband and wife Chris and Christine Moustoukas set up shop. It is now run by second generation sons and offers an extensive and excellent menu. Its fish and chips are great and come in a huge portion, but the highlight is the salt and pepper chips, which compete with the best. This should come as no surprise as Chris’s was one of the first chip shops in the city to offer Chinese dishes. Staying true to its Cypriot roots, the shop’s kebabs and gyros are also worth a go. A pint in the Rose of Mossley down the road while your kebab is cooked makes for a very enjoyable Friday evening.

Andy’s, Lark Lane – Patrick Edrich
There are two things that will keep you going back to the same spot – delicious food and amazing service. Andy’s on Lark Lane has both. Like most scouse chippies, it specialises in Chinese-inspired dishes, with a menu that features all the classics. Its location on drinking hotspot Lark Lane means invariably the queue is out the door most evenings. That never stops the front of house taking the time to chat and share a joke with their customers. If anything it’s worth going on a Friday night just to watch their back and forth dynamic! Anything on the menu is worth going for, but I don’t think you can go wrong with a heaped pile of salt and pepper chips with a tub of curry sauce for dunking. If you’re having a pint down Lark Lane or enjoying the sun in Sefton Park, why not grab a couple of trays for the journey home?

Anna Jung’s, Wavertree – Alice Walker
One of my favourite parts of Wavertree when I lived there was being able to go to Anna Jung’s on Friday nights. There would always be a queue out the door, probably because there was so much on offer there. It was obvious most of the customers were regulars, as staff knew them by name and knew their regulars as well. I really liked getting the siu mai from there, but I’m also partial to a good old curry and chips. Great price, friendly faces and excellent food – what more could you want?
