The Conservative Party is in “a lot of trouble” and is not currently on course to win the next general election, Lord Hague has warned.
The former Tory leader said Rishi Sunak should focus on setting out a long term vision for the UK which could shape the political debate in the coming years.
Lord Hague told Times Radio: “Clearly, the Conservative Party is in a lot of trouble now and it did badly in these elections, although it is true the Labour Party didn’t do as well as they were doing in the run up to 1997 for many reasons… so it is not as bad as then.
“But it is bad and clearly [the Conservative Party is] not on course to win the next general election at the moment.
“I am saying, well, if you are in such difficulties in the short term, do think about the longer term, think longer term and get the credit for that and show how all the announcements that he has been making recently on defence spending and on sickness benefits and getting people back into the workforce and on science and artificial intelligence, that can be part of a coherent plan for the future of the country.
“Maybe people won’t like that, well you are no worse off if they don’t like that because they are voting against the Conservatives anyway.”
