The latest rumours for Nintendo’s next console claim that there’ll be no stock shortages, as there was with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The first rule with Nintendo is to never think anything is certain with them, no matter how logical it seems or how many rumours there are. However, there’s been so much talk about the so-called Switch 2 lately, primarily from Asian sources, that it really does seem as if a 2024 launch is on the cards.
There was a significant leak on Friday, from analyst group Omdia, which suggested that the new console will have an 8-inch LCD screen and will be sold for $400 (£315), but more has emerged from the same source.
It’s now suggested that Nintendo will manufacture more than 10 million of the new consoles in this financial year, which starts in April. That should mean no repeat of the stock issues which plagued the first year and more of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Most of the more believable rumours about the Switch 2 are coming from component suppliers and other manufacturing partners in Asia, which is always the case with new hardware from any company.
They’ll know nothing about software plans, or things like pricing, but if manufacturing is starting to get into gear now then that does point towards a launch sometime this autumn.
What there hasn’t been any rumour about, though, is when Nintendo is likely to announce the new hardware. It’s now looking less likely that they’ll have their traditional Nintendo Direct in February, so the best guess would be a later one in spring, that will at least hint at the new console.
What’s unlikely to be talked about this year though is an OLED version of the new console. An LCD screen will be a backwards step for anyone that owns the OLED Model of the current Swich, but Omida claims that there are no plans for two versions of the console ‘this year’.
The Switch 2 is already likely to be more expensive than any of the current models of the original console, so Nintendo will no doubt be looking to keep the price tag down by going back to LCD – then potentially releasing a second model once the original one has been a proven success and component prices have fallen.
