Yellow Met Office weather warning for rain issued for Northern Ireland as flooding of buildings ‘likely’

The yellow warning for rain is to last from 4pm on Monday until 3pm on Tuesday and is in force for counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone.

Frequent and heavy showers are expected to cause flooding and disruption to travel, with public transport potentially impacted as well as the possibility of flooding on roads.

The Met Office has said that flooding of some homes and businesses is “likely” with 10mm of rain possible within just one hour. Certain areas facing the most frequent showers could see 30mm in a six hour period.

A further weather warning then comes into force at 6pm on Tuesday until 9am on Wednesday, stretching across Northern Ireland.

The Met Office said: “After a very brief respite, another spell of heavy rain is likely to push up from the southwest later on Tuesday and at first on Wednesday. Many places will see another 15 to 20mm, with 25 to 30mm possible in a few places, and falling on saturated ground, further impacts are likely in some places.”

It comes after heavy rain on Saturday afternoon caused a number of flooding incidents in Co Down, with at least one road closed due to the wet conditions.

Police closed the Portaferry Road in Kircubbin at the junction of the Inishargey Road due to the flooding.

Many of the issues affected the Bangor, Ards and north Down areas, with local councillors taking to social media in an attempt to raise awareness of the problems,

Alliance councillor for Bangor East and Donaghadee Hannah Irwin said she had contacted the flooding incident line for “urgent assistance” in relation to flooding in the Pinehill Gardens, Pinehill Avenue, Briarwood Drive, Silverbirch Road and Ballycrochan Road areas of Bangor.

DUP councillor for Bangor West, Jennifer Gilmour posted pictures of floodwater affecting Bangor train station, which was forced to close during the afternoon.

Flooding was also reported in the Glenburn Park area of Ballyholme, while Cllr Janice McArthur posted details of water affecting areas around Bangor, Millisle, Holywood and Groomsport.
