Select titles from Xbox’s first-party studios are going multi-platform, and the first of the confirmed four is available now: Pentiment. From Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian Entertainment, it’s a murder-mystery game where you must solve a series of murders in the 16th century Bavarian Alps. Art inspired by the earliest printed books and manuscripts is what gives the game its unique look, and you can play it now on PS5, PS4 for £15.99 / $19.99.
You play as Andreas Maler, an illustrator turned detective for the town of Tassing and its Kiersau Abbey. “Players will be responsible for conducting their own investigation to decide the fate of the community, but each decision will have lasting consequences and inexorably draws Andreas closer to the center of an underlying conspiracy.” Your choices will play out across multiple generations, dramatically affecting the community’s future.
The game released to critical acclaim in late 2022, managing a Metacritic rating of 86 across 60 verdicts. Eurogamer called it a “a brilliant narrative adventure that is filled with intelligence and heart” while sister site Pure Xbox awarded it a 9/10 and concluded: “It may be the fabulous art style that first draws you to this one, and it really is quite the looker, but it’s actually the very obvious care that’s been poured into the narrative and the exacting detail in every aspect of the world-building here that ends up selling the whole thing so well.”
Alongside today’s digital edition releasing on the PS Store, a physical version is up for pre-order at Limited Run Games. Will you be picking Pentiment up today? Solve the murders in the comments below.
