A woman is fighting for her life after suffering a suspected medical episode at the wheel of her car and crashing into a lampost in Urmston.
At around 8:31pm on Thursday (May 23) emergency services were scrambled to reports of a serious crash on Stretford Road in Urmston. A Ford Fiesta travelling eastbound had collided with a lamppost after the driver suffered a suspected medical episode, police said.
The driver, a woman aged in her 70s, was cut free from her car by fire crews before she was taken into the care of paramedics, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has said. She was taken to hospital where she remains in a life-threatening condition.

No other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported. Pictures from the scene showed a heavy emergency services presence, including police, ambulances and firefighters. The road was cordoned off as the emergency services attended.
In an update on Friday, GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) said they are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
They are also keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.
In a statement on Thursday, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just after 8.30pm today (Thursday, May 23) two fire engines from Stretford and Sale fire stations plus the enhanced rescue unit from Leigh fire station were called to reports of a crash involving one car on Stretford Road, Urmston.
“Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to rescue one woman from the car before handing them to the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service. Crews made the vehicle and surrounding area safe and were in attendance for around one hour.”
