When Is ‘Poor Things’ Coming To Streaming? How To Watch

To kick off award season, Poor Things took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. If you haven’t seen the unique fantasy film in theaters, find out when Poor Things will be released on streaming and digital below.

Based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, Poor Things stars Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a woman who must navigate the complexities of humanity and womanhood after she dies. Frankenstein-like mad scientist Godwin Baxter (portrayed by Willem Dafoe) implants the brain of her unborn child into her body. Along the way, Bella encounters men — played by the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, and others — who contribute to shaping her into an empowered version of herself.

Poor Things was adapted by screenwriter Tony McNamara and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (known for The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Favourite). “We made a shift from the novel because the film is solely about her journey, her perspective. And I felt that if we were going to do this, this world needs to be seen through her eyes,” Lanthimos explained to The Guardian about the differences between the book and film.

He continued, “So I thought that we should build this world; go into a studio and build everything, use old-school techniques and make everything ourselves and paint backdrops and make the sets and have a tactile sense of this world.”

At the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 7, Stone won the award for Female Actor in a Motion Picture Musical for her role as Bella. “I see this as a rom-com, in the sense that Bella falls in life itself, rather than a person,” Stone said in her acceptance speech. “She accepts the good and the bad in equal measure — all of it is important.”
