Tyburn Road – man dies in incident at industrial premises on A38 – updates

A man has tragically died following an incident at premises next to a major Birmingham Road. Police, fire and ambulance crews were sent to Tyburn Road in Erdington at around 10.30am on Thursday (February 8), close to the junction with Wheelwright Road.


The ambulance service sent multiple crews to the scene but said ‘sadly nothing could be done to save the man’. A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “We were called to an industrial premise on Tyburn Road, Birmingham at 10.32am today (February 8) to reports a man was seriously injured.



“Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A lane on the Tyburn Road going into the city remains closed. We are working alongside the Health & Safety Executive to establish what happened.”

The A38 Tyburn Road was closed southbound between Bromford Lane and Wheelwright Road. Buses were also diverted. This is a breaking incident and updates follow below…


Ambuilance service sent 8 crews but nothing could be done to save the man

West Midlands Ambulance Service has released a statement regarding the tragic incident in the A38 Tyburn Road in Erdington which has seen a man lose his life. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services the man could not be saved.

A spokeswoman for the service said: “We were called at 10.35am to an incident at a property on Tyburn Road, Erdington. Three ambulances, two paramedic officers, two BASICS emergency doctors and a Critical Care Car from Midland Air Ambulance attended the scene.

“Upon arrival we found a man. Unfortunately, it was clear that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.”

West Midlands Police has provided an update on the incident in Tyburn Road in Erdington which took place on Thursday morning and confirmed a man has tragically died. In a statement a spokeswoman for the force said: “We were called to an industrial premise on Tyburn Road, Birmingham at 10.32am today (February 8) to reports a man was seriously injured.

‘Forklift truck used to move glass’

An employee at neighbouring E.V Wood (anodising) Ltd indicated the incident may have involved a pallet of glass falling. He said: “Police, ambulances and the fire brigade were here.

“We believe glass fell on someone. They moved our forklift to get some of the glass out of the way. Glass was all smashed all over the road. They also used our forklift to smash the glass. They were big sheets of glass as big as the container.

“There must have been pallets of glass in the container and one of the pallets has fallen over onto someone.”

Claim ‘glass fell on man’

A worker at nearby premises has claimed the injuries were caused by ‘glass falling on a man’. Our reporter at the scene said: “The bustling Tyburn Road in Bromford is the scene of a major incident today with two fire engines, a police car and ambulance all gathered around an industrial premises. The police exact nature of the incident current is currently not known, but an employee of a neighbouring premises speculated that the incident involved ‘glass’ falling on someone.

“There are shards of broken glass outside the premises in question, with fire service workers unloading more from a blue HGV. The exact nature of the injuries the man sustained is not yet known. A police cordon remains in place on the pavement- but the road has been reopened.”

Our reporter Nathan Clarke is at the scene and he has said Tyburn Road is now open southbound after an earlier closure. There is a small cordon around premises in Tyburn Road., near Wheelwright Road, with the pavement shut off.

He said: “There’s two fire vehicles, one ambulance and a police car at the scene. There’s interest with a container with the fire service climbing on to it and a police officer photographing it.

“There’s lots of broken glass by the entrance of the premises.”

Man ‘seriously injured’ in workplace incident

West Midlands Police has issued a statement following the incident in Tyburn Road, It has confirmed a man has suffered ‘serious injuries’ in industrial premises.

The police has confirmed the force is liaising with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regarding the incident. In a statement, a force spokesman said: “We were called to an industrial premises on Tyburn Road, Birmingham at 10.32am today (8 Feb) to reports a man was seriously injured.

“We are liaising with the Health & Safety Executive and enquiries continue.”

Citrybound buses diverted

National Express West Midlands has confirmed its Number 61 buses are diverting as a result of the incident in Tyburn Road. It Tweeted: “Service Disruption. Due to an incident on Tyburn Road, Erdington.

“61 will be diverting to CITY ONLY via Bromford Lane and Kingsbury Road. We apologise for any disruption to your journey.”

Tyburn Road closed between Bromford Lane and Wheelwright Road

West Midlands Roads the West Midlands Combined Authority’s traffic updates service reported Tyburn Road as being closed in one direction. It said: “A38 Tyburn Road. Road traffic collision The route is closed southbound between Bromford Lane and Wheelwright Road. Emergency services are on scene. Allow extra time to travel or consider alternative routes.”

BirminghamLive understands this was not a road crash but is believed to have involved an incident in a building nearby.
