Mark Clattenburg will plead Nottingham Forest’s case to his one-time employers after the former referee was left stunned by Paul Tierney’s display at the City Ground.

In his new role as Forest’s referees’ analyst, Clattenburg watched in shock as the game’s key incident unfolded.

About a minute before Darwin Nunez scored Liverpool’s winner nine minutes into stoppage time, play had stopped for a head injury to Ibrahima Konate, as Callum Hudson-Odoi shaped to cross from a dangerous position. Konate recovered quickly and Tierney ruled that Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher should restart play.

Yet instead of returning possession, Kelleher picked out a team-mate and Liverpool went on the attack.

Though the goal did not develop immediately, Clattenburg argued it was against the laws of the game.

Clattenburg was disappointed with the performance of referee Paul Tierney at the City Ground

He said: ‘The law is clear that if the ball is outside the penalty area [when the game is stopped], you get possession back and the opposition goes back one metre.’

‘We’ll be speaking with the PGMOL and the Premier League and we’ll discuss the correct course of action in the near future,’ added Clattenburg, who said Tierney had denied him access to the referee’s room.

‘The owner’s quite upset because he has invested a lot of money in the football club and he wants to see results, he feels that another decision has gone against the club and quite rightly he’s upset.

‘I think everyone is and sad that they have lost in this way and hopefully their luck will change in the future.’
