A railway line will remain shut until at least Tuesday because the track is not “as level as it needs to be”.
Network Rail workers have been carrying out urgent repairs to the route between Tonbridge and Edenbridge since the defect was detected yesterday evening.
It has meant that all Southern services between the two towns have been cancelled.
Network Rail has posted pictures on X (formerly Twitter) showing what appears to be a slight dip in the track.
Yesterday evening, Network Rail said: “The problem is that the track isn’t as level as it needs to be, so we can’t safely run trains over it.
“Our engineers have assessed and we will be working through the night to try to fix the issue.”
The repairs have continued today.
At 11.50am, Network Rail said: “We are on site now lifting the rails and packing fresh material underneath, to bring them back to the level they need to be for trains to run safely.”
But another update was posted this afternoon, saying: “Unfortunately, we need to undertake further works before we can safely run trains over the Tonbridge – Edenbridge line.
“This means we will need to keep the line closed until at least Tuesday, and probably for longer – we will confirm arrangements shortly.”
Southern also posted on X saying the company is working to arrange alternative transport options.
It said anyone travelling from Edenbridge, Penshurst or Leigh should use a “help point to arrange alternative transport with a member of staff for the time being”.
Southern also said: “If you are travelling from Tonbridge, you can use your ticket at no extra cost on South Western Railway services to London Bridge / London Victoria.”
