Police issue update after popular footballer, 19, shot dead during Peak District ‘burglary’

A man arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenager was shot dead during a suspected burglary on the Peak District border has been released on bail. Marcus Smith was found dead after police responded to reports of a break-in.

Officers were called to a farm on Eccles Road near Whaley Bridge at around 1.20am on Wednesday (May 1). The 19-year-old – a former student at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School and footballer for local team Chapel Town FC – had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.



A second teenager was found with a gunshot wound nearby in the same road. He remains in hospital, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. In an update issued on Saturday (May 4) Derbyshire Police said he had now been bailed as the investigation continues.

Three people arrested in connection with the alleged burglary have also now been bailed.

Derbyshire Police said: “Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses and information on the incident. If you have any information that can assist our investigation you can contact the incident room directly by using the following link: Public Portal (mipp.police.uk).”
