One wrote: ‘It’s never Christmas without Only Fools And Horses’.

While a second fan, based on the other side of the world, added: ‘Let’s hope that we can pick Del Boy in South Africa!!!’

A third raved: ‘I’ll be sure to watch it, GREAT!’

Elsewhere a fourth added: ‘I’m so looking forward to watching it, you are guaranteed a good laugh to cheer us all up’.

It will be one of David’s first television appearances since he had to have hip surgery earlier this year.

A TV source told The Sun: ‘It wouldn’t be Christmas without the Trotters, so this is a great way for viewers to get their Only Fools fix.

‘Producers were delighted when David was passed fit to appear following his surgery, so the special will be cushty for fans.’

Sir David played Del Boy on BBC’s ‘Only Fools and Horses’ sitcom from 1981 to 2003.

The actor will reportedly be joined by Tessa Peake Jones, who played Raquel, to share some behind-the-scenes secrets, while fans Theo Paphitis and Krishnan Guru-Murthy will reflect on the magic of the show.

MailOnline has contacted Channel 5 for comment.

It comes after Sir David appeared on Lorraine last month and gave a health update following his surgery – revealing his ‘bionic’ hip is ‘wonderful’ after the Only Fools and Horses convention was postponed to January next year amid his health scare.

The actor confirmed his surgery had been ‘successful’ and filmed a clip of himself dramatically discarding his crutches.

Asked how he is doing following his operation, he told Lorraine: ‘I am on the mend’.

‘I am fine. I’m having a little trouble getting the muscles back because I was so infirm for two to three weeks as it were.

‘I wasn’t using the legs at all, that’s where I am at now, getting it back, doing some exercises. But the hip itself is wonderful.’
