OnePlus Watch 2 set to use Wear OS, Oppo shows

We’re just a few days away from the launch of the OnePlus Watch 2 but we still don’t officially know whether or not it runs Wear OS. If Oppo’s identical-looking Watch X is any indication, though, it most certainly will.

On Twitter/X, Oppo has announced that the Oppo Watch X will be launching on February 29. The smartwatch has an identical design to what we’ve seen from the OnePlus Watch 2 so far, right down to the funky way the buttons are mounted on the right side and the band design. And, of course, this makes sense, as Oppo and OnePlus are much more closely sharing hardware designs as of late – just look at the Oppo Find N3 and OnePlus Open.

But what’s key to this announcement is that Oppo directly confirms Wear OS is powering this new smartwatch.

The “Wear OS by Google” logo shows up across the teaser image with a footnote further specifying a minimum requirement of Android 8.0. It’s pretty clear cut, and the fact that the hardware shown is identical to the OnePlus Watch 2 leaves just one real possibility – the OnePlus Watch 2 runs Wear OS.

There’s still an inkling of possibility that OnePlus would skip support (again), but it seems rather unlikely. The teaser of 100-hour battery life coupled with the FCC’s reveal of a 500 mAh battery really strongly suggests that Wear OS, or at least something more capable than OnePlus’ prior RTOS, is in play here.

We won’t have to wait much longer for official details, though. The OnePlus Watch 2 is set to be officially unveiled on February 26.
