Pickford starts well

Jordan Pickford makes an early save to deny Harvey Barnes – I think – these red Newcastle numbers with no panel are horrible – but the Everton keeper spread himself well.

Despite the barrage of boos, he’s also been cool in possession a couple of times already.

Kick-off

Idrissa Gueye gets us underway with Everton attacking the Gallowgate End in the first half.

Another huge game for the Blues as they look for a first Premier League win of 2024.

Teams are out

Everton and Newcastle United’s players are out on the pitch.

I’m glad to see Everton back in blue tonight after the unneccessary use of the grey third kit at Bournemouth on Saturday.

A slight change to their usual colours though as the Magpies’ white socks ensure it’s blue-white-blue for Sean Dyche’s side this evening.

Away end heard loud and clear

Here we go then, Blues. Another midweek fixture at Newcastle and another big game for Dyche and the club. Loud boos from the away end in the heavens as the Premier League anthem plays. They have been in fine voice in the build up to this match.

Pantomime has started

If only it still was pantomime season – Everton of course haven’t won since before Christmas – but the St James’ Park stadium announcer has very deliberately left a large pause after Jordan Pickford’s name when reading out the visitors’ team line-up just so hordes of home fans can boo the former Sunderland player’s name.

Let’s just hope that England’s number one keeps his cool tonight in the face of such a hot reception.

A different era

A mere eight days ago, I wrote an article in the ECHO about how it was a decade on from Everton’s 3-0 win here when I was privileged enough to see Ross Barkley’s wonder goal after the Blues home-grown hero ran 60 yards up the St James’ Park pitch before finding the net.

After the final whistle, I interviewed John Stones who had bravely helped his side to an emphatic victory despite having a bandage on his injured head.

That game under Roberto Martinez now feels a long time ago. Everton haven’t won here since December 2019 when they triumphed 2-1 in Carlo Ancelotti’s first away game as Blues boss.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin bagged a brace that night but as we’ve already discussed, drops back to the bench for this one.

Hello from the North East

Hello everyone, Joe Thomas here in the bowels of St James’ Park… finally. Trouble on the rails led to a five hour train journey for me and Chris, so apologies for the late messages but we are here with you now. It’s another big game, Everton clearly aren’t favourites. BUT. BUT. And I got burnt for my positivity on Saturday, this is not a team to fear. Some big changes by Dyche, let’s hope they have a positive impact

Good evening

Hello everyone.

Joe and I are both now safely inside the Media Room at St James’ Park ahead of tonight’s 7:30pm kick-off.

As we all know, Everton are looking to avoid breaking the club record for a winless run in the Premier League this evening but it will be a tall order against Newcastle United.

It’s interesting to see a quartet of changes for the Blues tonight following the last-gasp 2-1 loss at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Beto is rewarded for his goal off the bench at the Vitality Stadium with a start, Vitalii Mykolenko returns from illness while Idrissa Gueye and Ashley Young also come in off the bench. Can it make a difference?

Unwanted record..

And so Everton must win tonight to avoid an unwanted club record.

after 12 games without a win, the Blues can break a Premier League record should they fail to emerge victorious tonight and it’ll be their worst run since 1957.

Sean Dyche might not be worried about records such as this, but it’s certainly not good for him, or the Blues, should it happen.

Newcastle team confirmed

Here’s the Newcastle team tonight with a number of changes. It represents a big opportunity for Everton.

NUFC: Dubravka; Krafth, Schär, Burn, Hall; Longstaff, Bruno, Anderson; J Murphy, Isak, Barnes

Subs: Karius, Gillespie, Dummett, Ritchie, Willock, White, Diallo, A Murphy, Parkinson

Everton team confirmed

Pickford, Mykolenko, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Godfrey, Gana, Onana, Young, McNeil, Doucoure, Beto

Virginia, Patterson, Keane, Coleman, Garner, Gomes, Harrison, Chermiti, Calvert-Lewin

Team news on its way… but where are Joe and Chris?

Team news is just five minutes away but thanks to some travel problems, Joe Thomas and Chris Beesley are going to be a little longer.

They have been held up by some broken down trains this afternoon but will be there before kick-off

Team news

As expected, Newcastle will have a number of young players in their squad this evening.

Everton, meanwhile, will hope for the return of Vitalii Mykolenko after illness and Arnaut Danjuma will be creeping closer to fitness.

Newcastle vs Everton kick off time and TV channel

Don’t forget, it’s a slightly earlier kick off tme this evening. Full details below:

What time does Newcastle vs Everton kick off?

This evening’s clash begins at 7.30pm UK time.

Is Newcastle vs Everton on TV?

Yes. The game will air live on TNT Sports 2 and discovery+, with coverage beginning one hour before kick-off at 6.30pm. Those with a TNT Sports or discovery+ subscription will be able to stream the match via their smartphone, tablet, games console or computer via the discovery+ or Sky Go apps.

Newcastle arrive

The home side are starting to arrive, with the likes of Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes among the players entering St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s injury list..

Everton will hope to take advantage of Newcastle’s lengthy injury list at St James Park this evening.

The Mapgies recovered from 3-1 down to West Ham on Saturday to win 4-3, but at the cost of even more players succumbing to injury or suspension.

One such player is Anthony Gordon, who picked up two bookings, received his marching orders and will sit out tonight’s game.

And there are around 10 more players out with injuries, including Miguel Amiron, Joelinton, Sven Botman and Lewis Miley.

Everton accounts

Everton’s accounts were released on Sunday evening and the Toffees revealed an £89m loss in their latest returns.

It’s led to plenty of reaction from Blues and here at the ECHO we’ve gone into great detail analysing them.

Predicted line-ups

There are plenty of supporters who will be hoping that Dyche makes a few changes tonight.

While the squad is small and has been stretched, the one-dimensional nature of Everton’s play has left so many frustrated in recent months.

Joe Thomas and Chris Beesley picked their preferred XIs for the fixture today before making their jaunt to the north-east, with each opting for changes in midfield, albeit with different personnel coming into the setup.

Welcome, Toffees!

Hello Blues and welcome to our coverage of Everton’s latest Premier League clash.

Lucky 13 for Sean Dyche? If it isn’t, he will ‘best’ Mike Walker’s record of 12 games in a row in the Premier League without winning.

After Saturday’s shambolic ending and loss at Bournemouth, plus the worrying accounts results that came out on Easter Sunday, there is naturally a feeling of pessimism around the Blues at the moment.

But a win can make everything feel a whole lot better and while Newcastle are a force on home soil, they are missing a huge number of players tonight. And Anthony Gordon won’t be on the pitch to rub it in anyway, which is good…right?

Anyway, we’re all in this together. This is your Tuesday night. Let’s charge towards the angst together…
