Newcastle set for £46.9m financial windfall to boost FFP plans ahead of summer transfer window

Going into the final eight games of the Premier League season, Newcastle have one aim: to again finish in the European places.

The Toon currently find themselves in eighth place in the table, one point behind West Ham United in seventh and two points behind Manchester United in sixth. The Hammers do, however, have a game in hand over both teams.

Even if the possibility of European football wasn’t on the table, the club would have a few million reasons to want to finish as high up the table as possible. It could provide a boost, given the crackdown on Profitability and Sustainability by the Premier League.

In total, Premier League clubs will earn a total of around £2.5bn, but the exact figures have not been made public for the last few years. We do, however, know that every place a club finishes higher in the table at the end of the season is worth £2.2m.

In terms of the payment of TV money, all clubs receive an equal base payment, with clubs that spend more on UK TV receiving slightly more. last season that was worth more than £80m, but that is expected to have grown this year.

Competing in the Champions League this year will also provide a financial boost to Newcastle. It is reported that just for reaching the group stage, teams receive around £13m in prize money; the rest is made up of a coefficient payout (the team’s European performance over a 10-year period) and TV money.

For Newcastle, it is estimated that the coefficient payout would be around £930k. There is no estimate as to how much the TV money is worth.

Depending on where Eddie Howe’s side finishes in the Premier League at the end of the season, it will determine how much money is made from the campaign. Realistically, sixth position is probably the highest the side can aim for. Compared to their current position of eighth, that would be worth £4.4m more in Premier League prize money, with the total being £33m. That finishing position would also see them secure European football next season and the financial boost that comes with that.

If the side does finish in sixth place, added to the money made from the Champions League campaign (not including TV money), then the total prize money that Newcastle could earn this season will stand at an estimated £46.93m.

Given the concerns over Profitability and Sustainability rules going into the new season, that money will come as a welcome boost to the club, and both they and the sides around them look to adhere to the rules, as well as boost their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.
