Met Office warns of ‘significant snowfall’ to start 2024 with prolonged cold spell forecast

The Met Office has hinted 2024 could start with “significant snowfall” with temperatures expected to plummet for the first few days of the new year. Storm Gerrit brought wind speeds of up to 50mph in parts of Nottinghamshire on Wednesday (December 27) after a particular mild Christmas.

Gusts of more than 40mph are possible in the county on Thursday, December 28. There is also a chance of heavy showers or more prolonged periods of rain.

Friday, December 29 is expected to be partly cloudy with sunny spells. Temperatures of between 3C and 8C have been forecast.

Heavy rain is expected on Saturday, December 30, according to the Met Office. New Year’s Eve is expected to be cloudy with a little light rain in the morning.

The weather shouldn’t be an excuse to not get out for a New Year’s Day walk. It is expected to be cloudy in the morning before sunny intervals and temperatures around 7C.

But it is the Met Office’s long-term forecast, valid for the period from January 1 through until January 10, 2024, which brings the most concern. It warns of wintry showers and the chance of “significant snowfall.”

It reads: “Into the new year it now looks finely balanced whether near or slightly above temperatures will be in place across the south, with periods of rain, wind, and showers. Or if the slightly below average temperatures in place across the north; where showers will remain wintry, will manage to filter southwards or not.
