Matty Healy’s family have said Taylor Swift’s savage new track “won’t come as a shock” to him.

The pop star, 34, is heavily believed to have taken aim at the 1975 singer in her new song The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, which was released today. Taylor released her hotly-anticipated album The Tortured Poets Department and Swifties have been scouring the tracks revealed more about her personal life.

Many were surprised to find out that the title track of the new album was about her brief romance with longtime pal Matty, who she dated in May and June last year following her break-up with Joe Alwyn. “You tried to buy some pills from a friend of friends of mine/ But they just ghosted you/ Now you know what it feels like,” she sings in The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.

Fans took it as reference to Matty, who is the son of Denise Welch and Tim Healy. The lyrics refer to a man in a “Jehovah’s Witness suit” who was “rusting my sparkling summer”. Matty is known for wearing suits while performing and the pair are believed to have split last summer.

His aunt Debbie Dedes, who is Denise’s sister, has revealed how she thinks Matty has reacted to the tracks. She admitted “nothing surprises him anymore”. Debbie said: “He will not be surprised by the song. Him and her know what went on.” She said that Taylor is known for writing about her exes and added: “I don’t think it will come as a shock to him at all.”

Debbie also revealed to the Daily Mail that her nephew is “very happy” in a new relationship and that the family “know a bit more about what went on” with Taylor “than has been in the press”. Taylor sang that the unnamed man “tried to buy some pills” and “didn’t measure up in any measure of a man”.

Matty has been open about his drug problems and has also addressed speculation around his height. He claims he is 5ft 10ins but appears shorter as he is dwarfed by other members of The 1975. He told The Fader in 2018: “Everyone in [the 1975] is 6ft 4ins and I’m 5ft 10ins, so everyone thinks that I’m 5ft 5ins.”

Taylor also hinted at the comments Matty once made about being linked to the singer, calling it “emasculating”, as she fired off another seething lyric. She sang: “In public showed me off/ Then sank in stoned oblivion because once your queen had come/ You treat her like an ulcer/ You didn’t measure up in any measure of a man/ You said normal girls were boring but you were gone by morning.”
