Mason Greenwood opens up on Getafe move from Manchester United and response from supporters

Mason Greenwood says he is enjoying his season-long loan at Getafe from Manchester United and has explained his appreciation for the club’s fans.

The 22-year-old has recorded five goals and four assists in 17 matches, and this week picked up Getafe’s player of the month award as voted for by fans across La Liga. He is thought to be attracting interest from the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as a result, although his current club wishes to keep hold of him.

Greenwood secured his summer loan move upon United informing him he had no future at Old Trafford following an internal investigation after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control against him in February 2023. The forward, who has not played for United since January 2022 when the claims first emerged, has always denied all allegations.

He was greeted warmly by some Getafe supporters upon his August arrival, although a number also protested against the transfer.

Greenwood – who has started all but three matches this season – says he now feels settled in Spain and has thanked supporters, outlining his favourite moment so far. Asked about how he is finding life at Getafe by club media, the attacker said: “Everything’s fine. I adapted pretty quickly.

“Teammates took me under their wing and I’ve just been happy ever since, coming here and training, playing the games. I’m happy.”

He added: “The fans mean a lot to me. The best feeling so far is when I scored my first goal here at the stadium and it meant a lot to me, I heard the fans quite a lot.

“Also we had the training day and a lot of fans came out to watch so we always appreciate the fans. They’re like an extra man out there on the pitch when they’re out there supporting us.”

Greenwood’s contract at United does not expire until 2025.
