Man killed after driving wrong way onto M62 is named as police issue update

A pensioner who died after he drove the wrong way onto the M62 and crashed into another car has been named and pictured. Police say they are piecing together the circumstances surrounding the death of Leslie Lewis who was killed in a head-on smash near Saddleworth on Saturday (March 22).

The 78-year-old, from Doncaster, South Yorks, was driving a Vauxhall Corsa when he hit another car on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway at 2am. Police say he was driving from Doncaster to Hull before going onwards to Manchester.




When he stopped at the Hartshead Moor services he left the services from the wrong side and drove onto the wrong side of the M62, where he then crashed into a car. The male driver of the other vehicle remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Sgt Steve Suggitt of West Yorkshire Police said: “A great deal of work remains ongoing to investigate the circumstances of this collision, which tragically resulted in Leslie’s death and in another driver receiving serious injuries.

“I am seeking assistance from any member of the public who may know Leslie and had contact with him on Friday, March 22, whether in person or by telephone, as it is important that we build up a full picture of the circumstances of the incident.”

“If anyone has information about Leslie’s movements that Friday evening, I urge them to contact us.”
