Formby was in “total blackout” this evening amid reports of a power cut.
Homes and businesses across Formby were in darkness, with multiple people contacting the ECHO to report issues with their power. The region is braced for bad weather as Storm Elin is set to hit the North West, with Knowsley Safari earlier cancelling tonight’s festive event Enchanted.
Christmas shoppers in Liverpool city centre were also forced to put up hoods and umbrellas as squalls of wind and rain had an impact. It is unclear at this stage whether the power issues in Formby are linked to the weather, with SP Energy Networks confirming on their website that they were working on the issue. They confirmed a large number of postcodes, mostly beginning with L37, were affected.
In a post on their website, the power company said they had “no advance warning” of the power cut, and only became aware of it at 5.29pm. The post said: “Our control centre will attempt to reset the network remotely to restore power in stages, and we will also send our next available engineer to attend site.
“Our team will work to get your power back on as quickly and as safely as possible. Please speak with us if you are aware of any damage to the network or if this information does not apply to you.
“We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

One resident told us their power went off at around 5.45pm, with house alarms sounding immediately.
She said:
Everyone just wandered into the road and didn’t reallt know what to do. The power cut seems to be intermittent with the odd estate being office, some street lights and some traffic lights off

Formby mum: ‘everything went off’
One mum from Formby contacted us with an account of the power cut.
She said:
We were just cooking the tea when everything went off. First thing I did was go to Google the number for Scottish Power but we had no signal either. I was worried about a family member who lives alone so I drove to see how far the power cut had spread and to try and get some signal and I’ve never seen Formby like it, it was like rush hour x 10. The traffic lights going out really didn’t help either it was horrendous
