Live updates as severe delays hit M4 for second day

Motorists on the M4 are facing another day of disruption due to repair works at a main junction. Traffic is backed up along sections of the road near Newport on Sunday morning after drivers already faced delays through Saturday.


Junction 26 for Malpas is closed all weekend and traffic and will not reopen until Monday, February 26 at 6am. There are lane closures on approach to the closure and diversions in place with people asked to exit to the Malpas Interchange Roundabout and re-join from the entry slip road. Yesterday already saw severe delays and disruption to public transport due to the works.



Traffic cameras on Sunday morning showed heavy traffic on several parts of the M4 including at High Cross East, High Cross and near Tredegar Park. Inrix is reporting congestion and motorists are being advised of delays.

Traffic still backed up

The latest pictures show us traffic is still backed up on the M4 with the AA reporting delays of around 13 minutes.

Delays now around 13 minutes

The AA has updated to say there remains congestion due to the roadworks with delays now 13 minutes and average speeds of 10mph.

Delays still around 15 minutes

Inrix is still reporting heavy traffic around the Newport area, although they appear to be easing. The traffic monitoring service says: “Severe delays of 15 minutes and delays easing on M4 eastbound between junction 28 A48 (Tredegar Park) and junction 25A A4042 (Newport / Cwmbran). Average speed 10mph.

The latest look across Traffic Wales cameras show traffic is still very slow across different parts of the M4.

Delays currently around 10 minutes

Delays at the M4 towards Newport are currently around 10 minutes due to the ongoing roadworks at junction 26. Traffic is moving slightly faster, however. The AA says: “Severe delays of ten minutes on M4 eastbound between junction 28 A48 (Tredegar Park) and junction 25A A4042 (Newport / Cwmbran). Average speed ten mph.”

Junction 25A also shut due to emergency repairs

Inrix reports that in addition to the weekend repairs at junction 26, the entry slip road at junction 25A A4042 Newport/Cwmbran is closed eastbound due to emergency repairs. Traffic is coping well.

More closures next week

Motorists are set to be hit by several closures on the M4 this week which will see some key routes shut. A number of road closures will take place this week as maintenance and repair work is carried out on the network.

The most prominent closures will take place around Cardiff, Newport and Swansea and in most cases will occur in the evenings and mornings. People are being advised to allow for extra travel time as a result.

The closures are:

  • Junction 33 Capel Llanilltern to 32 Coryton will be closed eastbound from February 19 to February 27 between 8pm and 6am each day due to resurfacing work
  • Junction 47 Penllergaer will be closed westbound from February 19 to February 28 between 8pm and 6am due to resurfacing work
  • Junction 34 Miskin to junction 32 Coryton will be closed eastbound from February 19 to February 27 between 8pm and 6am each day due to resurfacing work
  • Junction 47 Penllergaer will be closed westbound from February 22 to February 27 between 8pm and 6am due to resurfacing work

  • Junction 24 Coldra to junction 28 Tredegar will be closed westbound at the tunnel and entry slip road from February 26 to March 2 between 8pm and 6am due to maintenance work

  • Junction 32 Coryton to junction 33 Capel Llanilltern will be shut eastbound from February 26 to March 8 between 8pm and 6am due to resurfacing work

Traffic very heavy towards Newport with delays of 14 minutes

Traffic is currently heavy around Newport with delays of 14 minutes and increasing between junction 28 A48 (Tredegar Park) and junction 25A A4042 (Newport / Cwmbran). Average speed is just 5mph.

Traffic backed up on several routes

The roadworks at junction 26 are causing disruption for the second day in a row on the M4. The traffic is currently backed up on several areas of the road including near Tredegar Park, at High Cross East and at High Cross eastbound.
