King Charles waves to well-wishers in first public outing since cancer diagnosis
King Charles has been pictured smiling with the Queen by his side as he returned to London to continue his cancer treatment.
The King and Queen Camilla flew by helicopter to Buckingham Palace from their private Sandringham home, and were driven the short distance to nearby Clarence House.
Last week the monarch revealed the diagnosis to the public after treatment for a benign enlarged prostate led to the shock discovery.
The Monarch returned from a week in Sandringham, Norfolk to continue his treatment after a brief visit from his son Prince Harry at Clarence House on Tuesday who flew in from California.
On Saturday, the King spoke about his diagnosis for the first time as he thanked people for their “many messages of support and good wishes”. He added in his statement that it was “equally heartening” to hear how sharing his diagnosis has helped to promote public understanding of cancer.
The King was seen smiling and waving on Sunday as he made his first public outing since his cancer diagnosis.
Charles has postponed all public-facing duties, but is continuing with behind-the-scenes work on his red boxes of state papers.

King Charles will reveal the type of cancer he has been diagnosed with after his treatment, a royal insider has said. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward said she is “certain” Charles will share more details about his diagnosis, during an interview on Loose Women on Tuesday (13 February). Ms Seward described the King as a “private person” but said he will want to raise awareness of his type of cancer. How will the diagnosis affect his royal duties?
Charles will be stepping back from public duties during treatment for the disease on the advice of his doctors, according to Buckingham Palace. However, he will continue to oversee state business and official paperwork.
The King returned to London on Tuesday to receive his second round of treatment after he spent a week at his estate in Sandringham. But the palace has made clear the King intends to return to his duties as soon as his health allows.
In the statement, the Palace said: “He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”
Senior royals are expected to stand in for him, but a shortage of working royals could pose a potential problem in the coming months.
The Prince of Wales returned to public duties last week, however the Princess of Wales is not expected to carry out any engagements until after Easter due to her own health issues.
Both Prince Harry and Prince Andrew are no longer working royals, leaving only the Princess Royal and Prince Edward and his wife Sophie to hold the fort.

Will the King abdicate?
The statement released by Buckingham Palace has given no indication that the King intends to step down. In fact, it suggests that he hopes to return to his duties in full in the future.
The last British monarch to leave the throne was Edward VIII, but that was for personal reasons when he decided to marry American actor and divorcee Wallis Simpson in 1936.
Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did not abdicate despite health struggles towards the end of her life.
