Katsuhiro Harada alludes to retirement after Tekken 9

Tekken 8 was only released a couple of months ago with the first DLC fighter, Eddy Gordo, releasing on April 1, 2024 via early access while everyone else will get access to the character on April 4, 2024. Considering how long Tekken 7 received developer support, we can expect a long lifetime for Tekken 8.

It’s definitely too early to be talking about Tekken 9, but the topic recently came up anyhow during a recent episode of Harada’s Bar in which Katsuhiro Harada and Michael Murray were discussing things with Lenne Hardt, the voice actress behind Tekken 8’s announcer.

“When are you going to do Tekken 9?” asked Hardt during the program. This was a rather bold question considering how early it still was for Tekken 8.

However, Harada was surprisingly willing to answer. Of course, what he said proved to be very interesting.

“Tekken 9 will be our last work before retirement,” responded Harada after a brief moment of thinking. “If we were to work on Tekken 9, it would likely be our final project.”

“People would be like, ‘Congratulations on on your retirement. Thank you for all your hard work until now,'” chimed in Murray.

It’s not entirely clear if Harada and Murray are being serious or if they’re simply joking. If we assume they’re being serious, then we could probably expect Tekken 9 to provide some sort of conclusion to its story, at least in terms of what has been happening between Jin and Kazuya.

Following this, Harada would give a timeframe in which he was hopeful about Tekken 9’s release window. It would appear that this is something that he’s been thinking about.

“I think the next would be the release of the PlayStation 6 or the new series of Xbox,” continued Harada. “When that happens, I want to release [Tekken] 9 immediately. That’s one thing I’d love to do.”

From this, it sounds like Harada wants to release Tekken 9 as a launch title for the next generation of consoles. Notably, Tekken 8 was released a little over three years after the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
