Kate Garraway hospitalised amid hidden struggles and pressure of caring for Derek Draper

Kate Garraway has recalled how she was hospitalised amid Derek Draper’s own health battles.

The latest documentary showing Derek Draper’s final few weeks had several heartbreaking revelations about Derek and his wife Kate Garraway and their two children’s own plight to get the care Derek so much needed. Kate and her children cared for him in his four-year health battle with the help of multiple carers, at a cost of £16,000 a month.

The pressure of caring for her husband Derek, who passed away in January at the age of 56, became so intense for Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, also 56, that she was hospitalised as her own mental and physical health suffered due to the Derek’s condition and the impact it made on her family and children, daughter Darcey, 18, and son Billy, 15.

Derek’s Story, which has aired on ITV, has given viewers an insight into the former politician’s devastating final year with his family while battling his illness. After Derek passed away in January, Kate was forced to hit back at cruel trolls who tried to accuse her of not grieving ‘properly’ as she returned to her work duties just weeks after her husband’s death.

Kate admitted she found it beyond difficult to come to terms with Derek’s death. She also said that she felt it wasn’t right to release the new documentary, however, the last thing she wanted to do was to let her supporters down and most of all, Derek, who wanted his story to be told. Kate has previously documented Derek’s ongoing health battle in the documentaries Caring for Derek and Finding Derek and says she wanted to convey his message to never give up on loved ones.

The harrowing documentary has also shown how the pressures of caring for an ill loved one can impact one’s mental and physical health after it was revealed that Kate was hospitalised amid the stress of her heartbreaking family situation. During the sad scenes, Kate’s good friend shared her concern that the Good Morning Britain host could end up back in hospital.

“Kate was on her way here, and she had pains in her chest and throw up over herself in the car. It was just that moment of ‘christ, even the woman that we thought could go on forever,'” her friend and radio producer revealed.

She explained that Kate had to continue working to pay the bills for Derek’s enormous care bill, but her friend was terrified for her when Kate had to be rushed into hospital after falling ill on her way to work.
