Jesse Marsch confirms Leeds United’s past interest in Nottingham Forest star live on Sky Sports

Leeds United tried to sign striker Taiwo Awoniyi before he moved to Nottingham Forest, according to Jesse Marsch.

So much has changed in the year since Jesse Marsch was sacked from Elland Road, with a return to the Premier League hopefully next on the agenda for the Whites.

For the American, he’s yet to return to the touchline with a new job, instead becoming a frequent media presence, including an appearance on Monday Night Football with Sky Sports.

Jesse Marsch confirms Leeds’ past interest in Taiwo Awoniyi

Marsch’s appearance live on Sky was largely to dissect pre-selected Premier League topics on the agenda, but he did note previous instances that tie into his time at Elland Road.

Analysis of Nottingham Forest’s turnaround under Nuno Espírito Santo has been aided by the form of striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who scored a fine goal in their win over West Ham at the weekend.

Marsch in fact revealed that Awoniyi was a striker that he and Leeds were keen on signing during his time at the club, before he switched from Union Berlin to the City Ground:

“Yeah, we looked at him for Leeds, and he came from the Bundesliga as well. Good player. Technically very good, strong, fast, great touch there.”

Awoniyi another that would have been a great striker signing for Leeds

It was painfully obvious in the summer after we survived under Marsch, that a striker was going to be vital.

We instead relied on an ill-suited Rodrigo and an unfit Patrick Bamford – both of whom weren’t up to it for one reason or another due to injuries and the system.

Awoniyi meanwhile, was the difference between Forest staying up and being relegated with his goals.

That sort of signing is what we needed, but we instead leaned on Marsch’s Red Bull influence and signed a lot of dross.

“Quiz:

Has Bamford scored more or less for Leeds than Jack Charlton?
