‘I’m definitely on the downwards slide’

Liam Gallagher has revealed that he is on a health kick to ‘undo years of partying’ amid his arthritis battle and dealing with an autoimmune condition.

The Oasis singer, 51, told how his age is catching up with him after years of drinking and drug taking and that he now has a very different lifestyle.

In 2023 Liam revealed that he needed the joints replacing in his hip due to arthritis as a result of a longstanding thyroid problem. He then underwent a major hip operation.

Before that in 2017 he was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition of the thyroid gland. In addition he also suffers with the skin condition  psoriasis.

He has now told The Sun: ‘You’ve got to undo all the bad work you’ve done through f***ing getting off your head and all that.

‘It’s time to undo it all now and get back to reality. All that stuff that you thought was cool in the early days . . . it’s time to get healthy.’

His ‘health trip’ has seen him cutting back on booze and stop drug taking and he now gets up at 4am every day.

Liam told the publication: ‘As you get older, life is precious, do you know what I mean? I’m a pretty happy-go-lucky guy. I love waking up early in the morning.

‘I’m definitely on the downwards slide, though. But we’re all going to die, aren’t we?’

Speaking about his hip issues last year he said: ‘My hips are f***ed, I’ve got arthritis, bad.

‘I went to get it checked out and my bones are mashed up. The lady was going, ‘Oh, you might need a hip operation, a replacement.”

He said at the time he didn’t want the operation because of the ‘stigma’.

‘I think I’d rather just be in pain. Which is ridiculous, obviously. I know that. Just get them fixed. But it’s the stigma, saying you’ve had your hips replaced. What’s next?’

Taking to social media he penned: ‘Morning Rastas so I had my Hip operation last wk all went well and RESPEK to all the doctors n nurses who looked after me Big shout out to the A team for getting us home safe n sound’

He told MoJo magazine: ‘When the weather’s cold, my hips are like snap, crackle and pop. I need warmth.

‘I can’t sleep at night for the pain. Tossing and turning. So I’m on herbal sleeping tablets and they’ve saved my life. One of them, seven hours out, no pain, nothing.

‘My new thing is Deep Heat. Caked myself in it on the knees and hips, the calves, then into the steam room for as long as I can handle it.’

Liam, a keen jogger, was told by doctors to run less to help manage the condition.

In the interview he also spoke about his psoriasis, saying he once met a fan who thought he had cocaine in his hair – but it was actually bits of skin from his itchy scalp.

He said: ‘I’ve got psoriasis, so I had obviously been scratching it during the day and there were little white bits and s**t. They were taking it out of my hair and putting it on their gums and putting it up their f***ing nose!’

Taking to Twitter last February he said of having his hip operation: ‘Morning Rastas so I had my Hip operation last wk [week] all went well and RESPEK [respect] to all the doctors n nurses who looked after me Big shout out to the A team for getting us home safe n sound.

‘You know who you are and Florence guru I love and adore you Riverdance here I come LG x’.

One fan asked: ‘I hope the operation hasn’t affected your swagger!!’.

Only for Liam to quickly reply: ‘I’m getting my physio to study old videos of my walk so we don’t miss a trick the comeback is real.’

Liam is currently on a UK tour performing alongside John Squire after the release of the duo’s new album.

He is engaged to his fiancée Debbie Gwyther.

WHAT IS PSORIASIS?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the skin and sometimes the joints.

Around two per cent of people in the US and UK suffer from the condition.

Psoriasis occurs when a person’s skin replacement process takes place within days rather than the usual 21-to-28 days.

The accumulation of skin cells builds up to form raised plaques, which can be flaky, scaly and itchy.

Psoriasis arthritis can occur in the joints near affected skin, causing them to become tender, swollen and stiff.

Anyone can suffer, but psoriasis is more common in people in their late teens-to-early 30s or those between the ages of 50 and 60.

Psoriasis’ cause is unclear. Flare-ups can be triggered by stress, skin injury, hormonal changes and certain medications.

It is not contagious and there is no cure.

Treatment focuses on managing symptoms via topical creams, gels and medication.

Liam and Debbie began dating in 2013, and he moved into her house, though he didn’t divorce first wife Nicola Appleton until the year after.

The couple were due to tie the knot in May last year, however they were forced to postpone after Liam underwent double hip replacement surgery.

Despite already booking their big day on the shores of Lake Como, the couple decided instead to turn the trip into a family holiday amid the rocker’s path to recovery.

A source told The Sun at the time: ‘The wedding was supposed to happen last month but in the weeks leading up to it Liam and Debbie decided to push it back.

‘Liam is still recovering from his hip surgery and wants to be on top form when he says I do for a third time.

‘They were joined by his sons Gene and Lennon and his daughter Molly and enjoyed a relaxing break’.

Liam has been married twice: firstly to actress Patsy Kensit, and secondly to All Saints singer Nicola Appleton.

The former Oasis frontman has four children: sons Lennon, 24, and Gene, 22, with Patsy and Nicola respectively, and Molly, 25, from an affair with Lisa Moorish while he was married to Patsy, and Gemma, 10, from an affair with Liza Ghorbani while he was married to Nicola.

Meanwhile Liam and Stone Roses guitarist John are currently touring the UK after the release of their collaborative self-titled album.

Revealing how they came to work together during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show earlier this month, Liam explained: ‘Down Knebworth, John came down to play on one of the tunes at the end.

‘So in the rehearsals leading up to it, I hadn’t seen him for ages, so I said ‘what have you been up to?’ and he said ”I’ve been writing some tunes.” I said ”Who’s singing them?” and he went ”well, you are.” And I was gonna have a year off and that, you know what I mean? So it’s his fault.’

Asked who his first choice was for the songs, Liam said to John ‘you were looking out for a girl weren’t ya? And then you ended up with this sort’. John jokes: ‘Yeah, I need new management!’

He has now told The Sun: ‘You’ve got to undo all the bad work you’ve done through f***ing getting off your head and all that’ (seen in 2000)

Explaining why they wanted to work together, John said: ‘We know each other’s music knowledge inside out, I knew we’d always be on the same page.’

Liam admitted John was part of the reason he wanted to start his own band: ‘I was always inspired by John’s band, do you know what I mean? He was the first band I ever went to see, The [Stone] Roses.

‘I was 15, 16 and that was it, it changed my life,’ he added that after that he knew ‘All I’ve got to do now is learn how to sing’

When The Stone Roses ended John said: ‘I think I carried on writing songs, actually got another band together, The Seahorses, then had loads of kids.’
