The chemical has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, which can improve heart health and reduce the risk of heart attacks.

It can also help increase muscle mass. Dr Paulvin told CNBC: “Taurine functions as a cell volumizer, drawing water into muscle cells and creating a more favourable environment for muscle growth.

“This may also allow individuals to train harder and, over time, build more muscle. Combined with a proper diet and exercise regimen, all of this can help slow the ageing process.”

Taurine also has the potential to lower blood pressure through its promotion of vasodilation – the relaxing and widening of blood vessels – which contributes to improved blood flow.

Research has shown that taking taurine can help stimulate stem cell production which leads to boosted brain function.

It can also help repair DNA “due to its ability to scavenge harmful free radicals, while supporting DNA repair mechanisms that can reduce the occurrence of genetic mutations and contribute to overall cellular health”.

Whilst Dr Paulvin takes around 2,000 milligrams per day, he recommends those just getting started on it to begin with a lower dosage of around 500 to 1,000 milligrams.

If supplements aren’t for you, Dr Paulvin encourages people to add more foods with Taurine in them into their diet, citing chicken, turkey and tuna as good examples.
