Iceland is the most recent supermarket to recall a food product due to an undeclared ingredient that could cause a red raised rash, stomach pain or vomiting in those who are sensitive to it.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) stated: “Iceland is recalling Iceland 4 Creamy Chicken Pies because they may contain sulphites which are not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.”

A customer notice from Iceland read: “We are taking the precautionary measure of recalling this batch of the above product because this product may contain undeclared Sulphites allergen, and therefore poses a potential risk to those people that have an allergy to Sulphites. Only the best before date listed in this notice is affected.”
Customers were told: “If you have purchased any of the above product, do not eat it.”
They were instead advised to check if they have bought the affected product by taking a photo of the notice or writing down the details at home.
Then, return the product to any Iceland store where a refund will be given, no receipt required.

Anaphylaxis UK said: “The term ‘sulphites’ refers to a group of substances including sulphur dioxide and sodium or potassium metabisulphite. They are found naturally in some foods but are also used as preservatives and bleaching agents – they are added to foods and drinks to slow down how fast they go off and to lighten their colour.
“Most people who have reactions to sulphites have sensitivity reactions. This type of reaction does not involve the immune system so it is not the same as an allergy, but it can cause allergy-type symptoms that can sometimes be serious. They can affect your breathing, for example.”
Common symptoms of sulphite sensitivity include wheezing, a tight chest, cough, a red raised rash (known as hives or urticaria), stomach pain or vomiting, and worsening eczema.

The FSA explained why product recalls happen. The Government department said: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold.
“Then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).
“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
