I tested luxury chocolate biscuits after Choco Leibniz packs shrank

THE cost of living continues to bite – with the biscuit tin the latest victim of “shrinkflation”.

German giant Bahlsen has removed a biscuit from their popular milk and dark chocolate topped Choco Leibniz packs, so they now contain only eight, while the cost has remained the same.

Yet with most supermarkets selling their own version of the tasty treats, who offers the most biccies for your buck?

Laura Stott finds out . . .

Milk Chocolate Butter Biscuits, Tesco, 125g, £1.65, 18p each

Tesco offer well sized snacksCredit: Damien McFadden

NINE well-sized snacks but at 18p per biscuit, for a supermarket own brand, that doesn’t offer great value.

But they look and taste good, with a buttery aroma and a thick layer of glossy, creamy chocolate on top.

Tower Gate Milk Chocolate Butter Biscuits, Lidl, 125g, 85p, 9p each

Lidl are my winnersCredit: Damien McFadden

BRILLIANT value with nine milk chocolate- topped butter biscuits for under £1.

The treats are well-sized, tasty and buttery and the chocolate layer is thick and inviting – perfect for dipping into a cuppa.

RATING: 5/5

Milk Chocolate Butter Biscuits, Asda, 125g, £1, 11p each

Asda offer a thick layer of chocolate on their biscuitsCredit: Damien McFadden

A GREAT value version with good-quality ingredients, so these nine biscuits taste delicious, with a thick layer of chocolate made from 63 per cent cocoa solids on top.

A decadent choice with a great texture.

Milk Chocolate Malted Milk Biscuits, Sainsbury’s, 250g, £1.30, 6p each

There are 22 biscuits in each Sainsbury’s packCredit: Damien McFadden

WITH 22 per pack, these go a lot further in your kitchen cupboard.

The base is more milky than buttery and the chocolate topping isn’t thick, but you get well over double the number of Bahlsen’s and they taste remarkably similar.

Milk Chocolate Malted Milk Biscuits 250g, Morrisons, £1.30, 6p each

Morrisons doesn’t offer an identical copy of the Choco LeibnizCredit: Damien McFadden

LIKE Sainsbury’s, Morrisons doesn’t offer an identical copy of the Choco Leibniz.

But with 23 biscuits, these offer far better value and a nice malty, milky taste.

However, the chocolate is slightly less creamy and in a thinner layer.

Belmont Milk Chocolate Butter Biscuits, Aldi, 125g, 89p, 10p each

Aldi’s butter biscuits were flavourful but could have been a bit richerCredit: Damien McFadden

I LIKED the fun motifs stamped on to the nine butter bics, with windmills, fairground or castle designs.

A decent chocolate topping with a full-fat milk flavour and a good, buttery biscuit, although it could have been a bit richer.

RATING: 4/5

Bahlsen Choco Leibniz Milk, Sainsbury’s, 111g, £1.85, 23p each

Choco Leibniz packs are now a biscuit down but remain the same priceCredit: Damien McFadden

NOW with only eight in a pack instead of nine and you pay a premium for the big name.

The biscuits taste nice but have a slight tang of the cardboard wrapper.

A shame, as the topping is good quality.
