‘Hate crime’ as men ‘hurl abuse’ at passengers on train including person in wheelchair

A group of men reportedly ‘hurled abuse’ at passengers on board a train, including a person in a wheelchair. The incident, on a service from Manchester Airport, is being treated by police as a hate crime.

Images of two men have been released by British Transport Police after the incident between 7.45pm and 8.15pm on November 11 last year.

The two victims involved were sat on the train when a group of men boarded at Horwich Parkway station. One of the men sat next to one of the victims and started using ‘sexually threatening language’, while another started to ‘become aggressive’ toward one of the victims who uses a wheelchair, police said.

The victims moved away from the men who continued to ‘verbally assault’ the pair with a ‘barrage of hateful comments and insults.’ The victims then got off the train, with the group of men doing so later at Blackpool North.

Officers believe the men in the images may have information which could help their investigation, and are urging anyone with any information to contact British Transport Police.
