Full list of devices BBC iPlayer app will be blocked on from tomorrow

The BBC iPlayer app is set to be closed down permanently tomorrow, April 8, with a number of devices facing potential blockage.

The BBC announced back in February that it would phase out one of its primary viewing apps and as of Monday, April 8, the iPlayer for PCs will cease to operate, and there seems no likelihood of it returning.

The explanation given by the BBC on its official website stated: “We have made the difficult decision to close the BBC iPlayer Downloads application for PC and Mac, due to the low number of people using it and the cost required to keep it going,”

This closure has been implemented over several stages throughout recent months. In February, the BBC stopped fresh installations of the PC app on any devices and as of last month, users were prohibited from streaming new content or saving shows onto their hard drives.

Now the final stage of the shutdown is being executed, where all existing downloads will face playback restrictions and the app will be closed indefinitely. It should be noted though that this does not prevent PC users from accessing shows via web browsers – only the app itself won’t be functional, reports the Mirror.

“This does not affect downloads on the BBC iPlayer mobile or tablet apps, and viewers can continue to stream programmes on BBC iPlayer on their PCs and Macs,” the BBC confirmed.
