Fifteen people taken to hospital after minibus carrying South Shields FC fans overturns on A1

Fifteen people have been taken to hospital after a minibus carrying South Shields fans overturned.

National Highways confirmed that there had been a ‘serious collision’ on Saturday involving an overturned vehicle which closed the A1 near Darrington in Yorkshire on Saturday evening. A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said there were numerous people on board the minibus and confirmed 15 people had been injured and taken to different hospitals in the area.

The road was closed in both directions, before the southbound carriageway reopened. Tailbacks reached several miles, despite diversion routes being put in place.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service called and then stood down a major incident and said its services were under “extreme pressure” because of the crash. No fatalities have been reported.

South Shields fans on board the overturned minibus were travelling back from a 3-2 defeat against Tamworth in the Vanarama National League North.

South Shields FC posted on their Facebook page: “Our thoughts go out to the supporters involved in a crash on the way home from today’s game. At this moment of time we have no further details, however we hope everyone is safe and recovering.”
