Ex-Chancellor discusses birth of baby Pax and juggling nappy changing in latest podcast with Ed Balls

Former Chancellor George Osborne has welcomed his third child, a baby boy named Pax, with his wife Thea Rogers.

The couple, who tied the knot in July last year at a ceremony in Bruton, Somerset, welcomed their son on Tuesday.

Osbourne, 52, made the happy announcement on Thursday whilst presenting on his Political Currency podcast with Ed Balls.

Speaking with the former Labour MP, he said: ‘We had a baby! Well, Thea has had a baby. Pax, a little boy born on Tuesday. He’s doing really well, and so is mum’.

Osborne and Rogers announced their engagement in April 2021, with the former Cabinet minister saying at the time: ‘I have probably never been happier in my life.’

The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Beau, in July of the same year, before their second son, Arthur, was born on December 30 2022.

Osborne also has two older children, Luke and Liberty, from his first marriage to author Frances Howell, who he divorced in 2019 after 21 years of marriage.

Discussing the happy news with fellow politician, Osbourne explained how he had come straight from the hospital to record their podcast.

He joked: ‘I’ve had a special dispensation to come and do the podcast because baby Pax is already following us. He’s hit follow on his podcast app.’

Delving into the complexities of fatherhood, Ed admitted that his wife, Yvette Cooper, had her own rule that she would not change any nappies in the first month after birth.

Osbourne said Thea had no such rule. He explained: ‘There’s a lot of nappy changing.

‘In fact we’ve got a two-year-old, a one-year-old and now a zero-year-old. So there are lots of different nappy sizes!’

Ed joked in return: ‘You are now outnumbered! You can’t do one-to-one marking. A much bigger challenge now’.

Reflecting on his situation, Osbourne admitted it was ‘absolutely wonderful’.

He proceeded to explain: ‘You know, when you look into his eyes – this little baby – I’m just reminded what an absolute miracle it is that these babies are born.

‘And I wonder what the world will be like as he spends the next century or so living in it’.

Rogers, who last year said she would be stepping back from her executive role at food delivery firm Deliveroo, worked together with Osbourne as she joined the Treasury from the BBC, initially working as a special adviser before being promoted to become his chief of staff in 2015.

She was tasked with reinventing the minister’s image, including ‘metrosexualising’ him by putting him on the 5:2 diet, which encourages fasting for two days and eating normally for five.

Since leaving No11, Osborne has held a number of jobs, including as a partner at boutique City investment bank, Robey Warshaw, which has propelled him into the upper ranks of the City.

A key lieutenant in Cameron’s Conservative government, Osborne is also chairman at the British Museum and of the ‘partners council’ which oversees Exor, the holding company of the Italian billionaire Agnelli family.

He was editor of the Evening Standard between 2017 and 2020, and is a director of his father’s wallpaper company Osborne & Little.

He is also believed to have worked on the sale of Chelsea Football Club, of whom he is a fan, to American tycoon Todd Boehly.
