Cyclist killed in hit and run as man and woman arrested

Two people have been arrested in connection with a man’s death after he was hit by a car which did not stop.

Merseyside Police were called to Islands Brow, close to its junction with Hinckley Road, in St Helens, following reports of a crash. Once officers got to the scene they found a man in his 50s, who was cycling on the road, severely injured.

It was reported the man was hit by a car, which didn’t stop at the scene. The man was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital for treatment.

Despite the efforts of medical staff at hospital, he died. Merseyside Police has now arrested a 60-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman from the St Helens area on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision.

They remain in custody and urgent enquiries continue. Police are appealing for anyone who was in the Haresfinch and Parr area of St Helens, particularly those travelling on Woodlands Rd, Green Leach Lane, Islands Brow or Park Road, between the hours of 6.17am and 6.31am to contact them.

Sergeant Simon Duffy said: “We are also keen to speak to anyone that noticed a silver coloured Skoda Fabia hatchback in these areas and I would urge people to review their dashcam if they travelled in the area at this time and speak to us as a matter of urgency if they believe they captured something significant.”
