A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died in west Belfast.
It’s understood the deceased was punched outside a licensed premises in the Cupar Street Upper area last night (Thursday).
He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in an ambulance but passed away.
A spokesperson for the PSNI has confirmed that a 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a murder investigation is underway.
Cupar Street Upper closed as a result, along with the Springfield Road between Lanark Way and Millennium Way, last night and police remain at the scene.
A statement from the police released in the early hours of the morning said: “Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation after a man was found with serious injuries in the Cupar Street area of west Belfast just after 8pm yesterday, Wednesday, 6th March.
“Sadly, the man passed away in hospital a short time later.
“A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody at this time.
“Officers remain at the scene and cordons are in place.”

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said last night: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 20:00 on Wednesday 6 March, following reports of an incident on Springfield Road.
“NIAS despatched two emergency crews to the incident.
“Following assessment and treatment at the scene, one patient was taken by ambulance to RVH.”
