Ciera Grimley: Horror Armagh crash claims third life as wife of first victim passes away

Ciera Grimley has become the third person to die as a result of the crash which occurred on the Gosford Road last week

Ciera Grimley passed away in hospital on Saturday.

She was the wife of GAA club secretary Patrick Grimley, who also died in last Saturday’s accident near Markethill.

The mum-of-three passed away in hospital on the same day another victim of the crash, Ciara McElvanna, was laid to rest.

The four-vehicle collision happened on the Gosford Road near Markethill in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

Mr and Mrs Grimley, from Madden, were returning from a night out with family and friends in Dundalk to celebrate Mr Grimley’s 40th birthday earlier that week when the accident happened. Nine were initially taken to hospital.

On Friday, police said two men and one woman remained in hospital and were still receiving medical treatment.

But Mrs Grimley lost her fight for life on Saturday.

Local SDLP councillor Thomas O’Hanlon said the community was in shock, urging people to pray for the community.

He said: “Now more than at any other time in the past week the people of Madden need our prayers, love and support.

“This has been a devastating week for the community and families are just heartbroken. Unfortunately there are still very tough days to come.

“Children have lost a mummy, a daddy and some have lost both. Parents have lost a son or daughter, siblings have lost a brother or sister. Friends are heartbroken. This is not how it should be.

“It’s hard to comprehend what has happened. If anything it’s made us all realise life can change in a split second. It’s taught us all to take nothing for granted, to tell those close to you that you love them every day.

“Hug the little ones in your life tightly, for you never know what tomorrow brings.

“There are tough days ahead, say as many prayers as you can muster for those who are suffering a terrible loss. Pray for those who have gone and those left to pick up the pieces.”

A post on FuneralTimes described Mrs Grimley as the “dearly beloved wife of the late Patrick (predeceased seven days ago in the same tragedy) and devoted mummy to Tadhg, Mya and Cadhla.

“Loving daughter of Eugene and Bridie and cherished sister to Donna (Young), Sarah-Jane (McCombe),Julie (Grant) and Paul. Loving daughter in law of Brian and Frances.

“Deeply regretted by her heartbroken son, daughters, parents, sisters, brother, parents in law, brothers and sister in law, nieces nephews and the entire family circle and many friends, and the wider Madden and Armagh community.

“On her gentle soul sweet Jesus have mercy.”

Funeral details have yet to be released.

The mum-of-three’s death comes on the same day as mourners at the funeral of another crash victim heard how she was a “deeply devoted caring mother and friend”.

Ciara McElvanna (44) died in hospital in Belfast on Wednesday.

A mother-of-four, Mrs McElvanna was the wife of former GAA player Kevin McElvanna, who played at senior level for Armagh from 2001 to 2006, winning an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medal.
