Cannock fire ‘under control but not out’ as drone footage shows extent of blaze

A huge fire at a parcel warehouse fire in Cannock is “under control” but not yet fully out. Firefighters remain at the scene in Cley Road more than 24 hours after the blaze broke out and expect to remain there “for a few days”.

The alarm was raised at around 6.15am on Thursday, May 9, when smoke and flames were seen coming out of the Super Smart Service site. Crews have been working throughout the night to contain the fire and stop it from spreading, with the cause yet to be determined.

Nearby residents have been urged to keep windows and doors closed “as a precaution”, despite there being “much less smoke” in the area. At the height of the blaze, plumes of smoke were spotted off the M6, while those living in Great Wyrley, Hednesford, Rugeley, Brownhills and Stafford told of smoke and ash in their area.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service shared drone footage taken on the morning of the blaze – which can be viewed above – and said: “The fire is under control but has yet to be fully extinguished. We’re expected to be in the area for a few days whilst we work with partners to bring the incident to a safe and swift conclusion.

“Although there is much less smoke in the area now, we’re still advising people nearby who think they’re affected to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution. The cause of the fire will be determined following a full investigation.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson added: “We’re continuing to support our colleagues at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service at the scene of an industrial fire in Cannock. Emergency services have been there since early yesterday morning after smoke and flames were seen coming out of an address on Cley Road.

“We’d like to thank residents and businesses in the area for their patience and understanding following an ongoing period of disruption. Once it’s safe to do so, we’ll be helping to support a full fire investigation at the scene.”
