A British skier has tragically died after he crashed into a tree at a resort in France.

The man, believed to be 68 years old, lost his life whilst he was on a ski trip in the town of Avoriaz, Morzine, on Tuesday. He was traveling at high speed as he tried to swerve away from a group of people at around 3pm local time. It has been reported that he made harsh impact with the tree and was found unresponsive by rescuers.

Despite their best efforts, he could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim is yet to be identified. Avoriaz is known as a top skiing destination and is one of 13 ski resorts within the Portes du Soleil region.

The incident comes just one month after another British skier fell to his death as he explored the ‘Swiss Wall’ route in the Portes du Soleil area, close to Avoriaz. The 47-year-old sadly lost control and plummeted down the side of the mountain on February 7.

The Swiss Wall, which starts at the French-Swiss border and moves into Switzerland, is best known for being one of the most steepest routes. The victim has since been named as Grahame Carter, from Chichester, West Sussex. Officials said he had entered the infamous slope with two other people. The area was closed at the time due to icy conditions.

A week before the incident, a 30-year-old British skier passed away after enduring a “heavy fall” at the Serre Chevalier resort in the La Salle-les-Alpes sector. Emergency responders were called to the scene before the French National Police (CRS) arrived and evacuated them. French broadcast network BFMTV said the skier was “in a state of brain death” when he was rushed to the Grenoble University Hospital. Medics sadly pronounced him dead.

According to local media, Patrick Arnaud, who runs the resort, said: “The victim was discovered by a patroller who immediately raised the alarm. Joined by several other trackers, they provided first aid. All the ski area teams are affected by this tragedy and all our thoughts are with the family.”
