Welcome to the festive quiz in which you simply have to get closer to the answer than anyone else. Now in its 16th year, all the questions in my Boxing Day family puzzler relate to events from the extraordinary year we have just had. All the solutions are numbers.

To make it fair, each player/team should write down their guesses before revealing them. One mark is given for the closest answer and three if by luck or genius you get it spot on. The answers can be found at the bottom of the page.

1. After 64 years and despite a backlash from fans, the Caramac chocolate bar was discontinued by Nestlé this year. The last few on the shelves retail for 75p, equivalent to 180 pre-decimal pennies. But how many old pennies did a bar cost when it was launched in 1959?

9. Back in 1950, the average person in Britain made 329 bus journeys a year. According to figures this year, how many bus trips does the average person make in a year now?

10. On 9 June, Nadine Dorries announced she was standing down as a Conservative MP with immediate effect. How many days did “immediate effect” prove to be?

15. Dubbed ‘Barbenheimer’, the films Barbie and Oppenheimer came to big screens around the world on the same day, Friday 21 July. In dollars, how much did the two movies take worldwide on the opening weekend?
