People have blasted the security controls at Birmingham Airport a “shambles” and terrible” with long delays causing half-term holiday chaos.

Thousands of passengers have been stuck in queues for more than an hour. Birmingham Airport passengers were told they would experience a major change to how they queue, transit to airside and carry liquids from this weekend as the airport rolls out its brand new security check-points.

Travellers were advised they could expect a “simpler and streamlined experience” in its new security checkpoints. With more than 200,000 customers expected through the doors for the half-term rush, there are key rule changes to be aware of, and “unfamiliar” queueing places as BHX bosses roll out its “state-of-the-art” security hall upgrade, which the airport said was complete.

But today passengers arriving at the airport have been far from happy. Peterborough mum Hannah Wright said: “Security is a shambles -anyone can come this far. We’ve been waiting an hour to fly to Majorca. Our son is claustrophobic so it’s hard for him. It’s put a dampener on the start of our holiday. There is nothing in place for children who might struggle in situations like this.”

Worcester man Phil Adams said: “It’s been terrible. We’ve been queuing over an hour. It’s really tiring and hot. We are flying to Orlando for a holiday of a lifetime so this is not the best start.”

Birmingham Airport had confirmed they have “fully resourced” their teams with “additional colleagues from across the business” assisting holidaymakers in the terminal, reported BirminghamLive. The Mirror has contacted Birmingham Airport for comment.

And there were also complaints yesterday. Traveller Trevor Bartlett said: “At 3.30pm this afternoon the queue for the 3 (yes only 3) lifts stretched back as far as M&S shop in snake fashion and wasn’t moving very quickly. Hope it is better in the morning.” And another person wrote on X: “Birmingham Airport queue today, leave plenty of time.” When one traveller asked him if it was moving quickly, he replied: “It took 1.5hrs to get through.”
