Almost Every ‘Destiny 2’ Expansion Is Now Free Before The Final Shape

As I’ve said before, Bungie is pulling out every single stop possible to ensure The Final Shape’s launch in Destiny is as big as it can be. I’m not going to call it “make or break” but…it needs to well. Really well.

Sometimes this extends to additions to the game itself players have been wanting, but now it’s just…making almost the entirety of Destiny 2 free ahead of The Final Shape. Yes, technically Destiny 2 is always “free to play” but that is a tiny amount of content these days compared to the whole as expansions and seasons are not included. Now? No more. For now.

From yesterday until June 4, the day of the launch of The Final Shape, Destiny 2 is making the following free:

  • Shadowkeep expansion (my least favorite, but still content)
  • Beyond Light expansion (the expansion you need to get the Stasis subclass)
  • The Witch Queen expansion (the best campaign storyline in Destiny 2)
  • Lightfall (this is only for PlayStation Plus subscribers to claim. Very bad campaign story but you get access to the awesome Strand subclass)
  • All four current seasons (which have brought a few of the best seasonal activities in the game’s history like The Coil. Others like Onslaught are free already. Good story moments too)

This is easily the most content that’s ever been offered in Destiny for free, a way to get players hooked on the game and play through at least the essential elements of the story before launch. The original Red War campaign the game launched with, along with its excellent Forsaken expansion which arrived before Shadowkeep, have been taken out of the game and shoved in a content vault.

I’ve maintained for a long while now that old Destiny 2 expansions should become free over time, at least Shadowkeep and Beyond Light by now, but I suppose this is the best we can hope for. As someone with 3,500 hours of playtime under my belt and roughly that many Destiny articles written, yes, I recommend this game, despite its issues. It’s fun. It’s a fun game. Confusing to start, perhaps. But fun.

The goal here is to A) get people to buy those campaigns permanently after the fact to retain that content (you may at least have to do that with Beyond Light if you want to keep Stasis), and B) to be hyped enough to buy The Final Shape to keep going. While four expansions sounds like a lot to catch up on, it’s really not if you’re just playing through the campaign and doing nothing else, where each of those is maybe 5-6 hours max. This isn’t Final Fantasy XIV where you have to play 200 hours or so to be current in many ways.

We’ll see how many players take advantage of this. Again, this is on all platforms minus Lightfall only being for PlayStation Plus. But claiming that their makes ownership extend past this window. Enjoy.
