Jonathan David is not exactly a new name in the Chelsea rumor mill, with the 24-year-old striker linked multiple times over the past couple seasons, including back in January of this year. But unlike in those windows past, David is expected to actually move this time, including by the president of his current club himself.
“Leny Yoro and Jonathan David can leave the club this summer. Both have the ‘exit voucher’ due to their contract situation.”
-Olivier Letang; source: Evening Standard
The “contract situation” that Letang is referring to is that David only has one year left on his contract, and since the prospect of a renewal seems even less likely than for Conor Gallagher at Chelsea, Lille are expected to welcome bids for a “reasonable” transfer.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea are weighing up this possibility, having “held talks” with the player’s representatives already. We have not yet made an official approach, but he is said to be “high” on our list of potential targets at striker.
David is currently with Canada at the Copa América. After a slow start to the season, he did finish with 26 goals in all competitions, including 14 in the league over the last four months of the season as Lille secured a top-four finish in Ligue 1.
