A flood warning is in place in part of Greater Manchester this morning after Storm Elin and Storm Fergus battered the region over the weekend.
The ‘act now’ warning is in place for the Pearl Brook in Horwich. The Environment Agency said ‘flooding is expected’ as river levels are ‘rising rapidly’.
Residents should ‘take action now’. The warning, which covers the area close to the river from Church Street to the M61, was last updated at 10.30pm last night.

Another update is due by 10am this morning. A number of other flood alerts – a lesser warning where residents should ‘be prepared’ are also in place in our region, including for the Upper River Douglas, Middle River Mersey and River Mersey Uplands.
The alerts come after two named storms battered the UK over the weekend – Storm Elin and Storm Fergus. A yellow weather warning for rain was issued by the Met Office, from 5pm on Sunday to 3am this morning.
Storm Elin led to major disruption on transport on Saturday, with chaos hitting both Manchester Piccadilly rail services and Metrolink. Thousands of homes were also left without power in Greater Manchester as tree branches and debris caused widespread damage, bringing down overhead power lines as winds hit more than 60mph
As of 7.50am this morning, these are the current alerts and warnings in place in our region:
– Flood warning – Pearl Brook at Horwich, area close to the river from Church Street to the M61
– Flood alert – Upper River Douglas. Areas most at risk include The River Douglas from Horwich Star Vale to Appley Bridge including Adlington, Blackrod, Wigan, Standish, and Gathurst.
– Flood alert – Middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston. Areas most at risk include low lying land and roads around Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks and their tributaries.
– Flood alert – River Mersey Uplands catchment including Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Denton, Stalybridge and Glossop. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Mersey, with low lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around low lying land and roads around the Rivers Goyt, Tame, Sett and Etherow and their tributaries.

Storm Fergus ‘concluded wet and windy weekend’
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said:
“Storm Fergus will conclude what has been an unsettled weekend of weather for the UK. Fergus will bring some strong winds and heavy rain for a time late on Sunday and into the early hours of Monday morning.
“While the strongest gusts are expected in the Republic of Ireland, Storm Fergus will bring some windy conditions to western areas, including Irish Sea coasts, while also bringing some potentially impactful rain. The rain has potential to be disruptive in parts of northern England and parts of Scotland, especially where it’s falling on very saturated ground.”
